Gargoyles, the beloved animated series, originally airing in the 1990s, captivated audiences with its unique blend of fantasy, action, and mythology. With its compelling storytelling, intricate character development, and darker tone, “Gargoyles” carved its place in the hearts of fans and remains a celebrated cult classic to this day.
Disney’s Distant Gargoyles: A Nameless Classic That Endured
Co-creator Greg Weisman revealed that Disney was hesitant to associate its name with the animated series “Gargoyles” during its original run. The absence of the Disney branding on the show’s title card raised questions among fans. While the exact reasons for this decision remain unknown, the dark tone and mature themes of “Gargoyles” are speculated to have played a role.
Despite the initial lack of studio support, the series developed a dedicated following over its three-season run. Fans have since campaigned for a revival, but while no official project is in development, Weisman has continued the story through a comic book series.
Greg Weisman’s Vision: Defining the Canon of Gargoyles Universe
Co-creator Greg Weisman clarified the continuity of the Gargoyles franchise in an interview ahead of the release of Gargoyles #1.
“Yes, the new Dynamite Gargoyles series is canon to the cartoon, as was the [Slave Labor Graphics] series. But if I’m doing my job right, you don’t need to have seen or read anything previously to enjoy the new stuff. You’ll obviously get more out of it if you look at the entire tapestry that makes up the Gargoyles universe.”

Weisman further outlined his personal view of what constitutes canon, excluding Gargoyles Season 3 and comics published by Marvel and Joe Books. According to him, the canon encompasses the 65 episodes of Seasons 1 and 2, along with the Gargoyles comics released by Slave Labor Graphics in the early 2000s.
