Marvel: Simu Liu Reveals ‘Shang-Chi’ Sequel Status, Is It Getting Delayed?

Actor Simu Liu, who dazzled audiences in the first Shang-Chi film, recently took to social media to share an update for fans about the highly anticipated sequel. Liu posted a question on his Threads account, inviting fans to ask him anything. One fan eagerly inquired about the status of the sequel to Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

What did Simu Liu say about the ‘Shang-Chi’ sequel film?

In his response to a fan question asking about a status update for Shang-Chi’s second installment, Liu said “Was told it would follow Avengers. But that keeps pushing back due to circumstances beyond my control.” The actor starred in the first film as the titular character, with an incredible portrayal of Shang-Chi.

Although Simu Liu did not disclose the specific reasons, Disney has recently made changes to its release schedule, including pushing back Avengers: Secret Wars to May 7, 2027. Avengers: The Kang Dynasty stars Jonathan Majors, who is currently facing assault charges in New York, and has also been delayed by a year to May 1, 2026. Several other Marvel projects have also been delayed due to the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike, including Thunderbolts and Blade. In his Thread, Liu also expressed hope that he would have more concrete information to share soon.

What do we know about the second ‘Shang-Chi’ film up till now?

In December 2021, it was announced that Destin Daniel Cretton would be returning to write and direct the sequel to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, as well as signing an overall deal with Marvel Studios. “Working on Shang-Chi with Kevin [Feige] and the Marvel Studios team was one of the highlights of my life, and I couldn’t be more excited about Tara’s vision for Onyx Collective,” Destin commented at the time the sequel was announced. “I can’t wait to explore new stories & build new worlds with this community.”

This announcement came amid the success of the first film which was released in September 2021, featured a predominately Asian cast, and went on to gross $432 million worldwide. Liu is again expected to return as the lead character, Shang-Chi. Although Simu Liu has taken on other projects since making his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut, including starring in Greta Gerwig’s upcoming Barbie film, the actor hinted earlier this year that fans may soon see his Marvel character interacting with other major superheroes in another film. Without revealing the movie he added, “Who knows, they might see something sooner than you think. We’ll see.”
