The anticipated sequel to Matthew Vaughn’s (“Kick Ass”) 2014 adaptation of Mark Millar’s comic-book of the same name, “Kingsman: The Golden Circle” debuted at the top spot with $39 million. It averaged a stunning $9743 from 4,003 locations. This was up 8% from the 2015 release of its predecessor, “Kingsman: The Secret Service”, which had opened to $36.2 million and went on to gross $414 million worldwide. “The Golden Circle” is expected to out-gross the first movie by a good margin, although its budget was considerably higher than “The Secret Service” owing to the addition of popular actors like Halle Berry, Channing Tatum, Jeff Bridges and Pedro Pascal, alongside returning players.

Stephen King spook-fest “IT” though dropped down to the second spot, it is still showing considerable legs with an impressive $30 million in its second weekend. That catapulted the domestic cume to $266.3 million with the weekend decline being 50%, a good figure for this genre. The Warner Bros. title is already the fifth highest grossing domestic blockbuster of 2017. Overseas audiences are still lining up big time as the movie grossed an estimated $38.3 million for a new international cume of $211.7 million with global up to $478 million. The U.K. and Mexico have been leading the way. It now looks on track to end up in the $320 million range in North America with the worldwide tally likely to finish north of $650 million, and that’s with no China release.

The third title in the LEGO Cinematic franchise, the “LEGO Ninjago Movie” opened to poor reviews and poorer results with an estimated $21.2 million in its debut weekend. This was a thunderous downfall from the $53 million opening of “The LEGO Batman Movie” from earlier this year and a sharp 69% tumble from the $69.1 million bow of 2014’s “The LEGO Movie”. The news is troubling for the franchise because this is the first time that both the reviews as well as the box-office collections for a LEGO movie were not up to snuff. The road ahead looks rocky as well with an estimated final domestic gross in the range of $115 million a possibility.

The action title “American Assassin” suffered the biggest drop in the top ten falling 58% to an estimated $6.3 million giving Lionsgate $26.2 million to date. Off 36% was the Reese Witherspoon comedy “Home Again” with an estimated $3.3 million and $22.3 million total. Paying audiences did not get what they expected with Paramount’s “mother!” which fell 57% to an estimated $3.3 million this weekend for a weak $13.4 million sum.

The top ten films grossed an estimated $110.3 million, which was up 19% from last year’s cumulative total.
