Scooby Doo: Fred Gets His Reputation Back After Having It Wrecked In HBO’s ‘Velma’

The Batman & Scooby-Doo Mysteries #8 comic got published on May 9th, 2023. Since then Fred is regaining audiences approval after his image was tarnished by his less-than-accurate portrayal in ‘Velma’. HBO Max released ‘Velma’ in January but it wasn’t a fan favorite since the beginning for many reasons. One of them being Fred depicted as a “unlikeable buffoon” but now events are taking a favorable turn for him!

What helped Fred redeem himself?

In the most recent Scooby Doo comic, Fred Jones finally managed to score a major win by ensnaring one of DC’s greatest escape artists. You guessed it! Fred captured Batman in one of his traps following his adventures with Mystery Inc, this time in competition with a new team of teenage sleuths known as the ‘Wraith Wranglers’ using their partnership with Batman to get ahead of a mystery. This win finally helped Fred rebound from his embarrassing depiction in Velma. He will always be the king of elaborate booby traps to us!

‘Velma’: Not an audience favorite

Classic Scooby-doo fans were not impressed by HBO’s new take on ‘Velma’. According to IN THE KNOW, ‘Velma’ is an adult animated series which focuses on Velma Dinkley through her adolescence. Fans took to social media to comment on their dislike for this show, saying it took their favorite character and turned her into something else. They blame Velma Dinkley’s voice actor Mindy Kaling for putting too much of herself into the show.

‘Velma’ showed horrible representations of the whole Mystery Inc gang, gaining a mere 9% Rotten Tomatoes rating. Aside from this, the writers of Scooby Doo declared Velma a canon lesbian, which the ‘Velma’ show apparently didn’t get the memo for, showing her ‘secret crush’ on Fred instead of Daphne in their promotional material.
