Netflix Releases First Look For Indonesian Romance TV Series ‘Cigarette Girl’

Netflix and Base Entertainment have debuted the first teaser trailer for the upcoming film Cigarette Girl (Gadis Kretek), directed by Kamila Andini and Ifa Isfansyah. Andini showcased the teaser live at the ContentAsia Summit 2023 in Bangkok, Thailand today and was met with an overall positive response that had viewers excited about the series. This “epic romance” will begin streaming on the platform on November 2!

What is the plot of ‘Cigarette Girl’?

The period drama Cigarette Girl, based on the novel by Ratih Kumala, revolves around a family that has grown rich through the production of Indonesia’s signature clove cigarettes. The son of the family is on a quest to locate the ideal girl who will fulfill the dying wish of his father. During the ContentAsia event, director Kamila Andini talked at length about the series, saying:

“This is a story set across two time periods and with so many characters. It’s a family drama and a romance, set against the backdrop of the Indonesian clove industry. This story has been with us for many years and we’re so excited to see the characters come to life and have their stories told to many kinds of audiences.”

For Cigarette Girl, Dian Sastrowardoyo and Putri Marino will portray the two female leads, while Ario Bayu and Arya Saloka will also appear in the series. The trailer showcases Dian’s character focusing on creating the perfect blend for clove cigarettes during production. The series is being produced by Shanty Harmayn and Tanya Yuson of Base Entertainment with direction from Andini and Isfansyah. The script for the series was written by the novel’s author, Ratih Kumala, along with Kanya K. Priyanti, Yuson, and Ambaridzki Ramadhantyo.
