James Gunn & DC Have Found Their New Superman For ‘Superman: Legacy’!

James Gunn has said multiple times that he wanted to create a “new interpretation” of Superman’s character in DC’s upcoming movie, ‘Superman: Legacy.’ Much to the fandom’s excitement, DC has found its lead actor for Superman, and its new Lois Lane as well. Ever since the rumors about James Gunn recasting Tyler Hoechlin’s Superman surfaced, people have been gunning (pun intended) for this one specific contender. Here’s what we know:

Who is the new Superman?

The Man of Steel has a new face! It was officially announced on June 27, 2023 that David Corenswet has been cast as Superman in James Gunn’s upcoming film, Superman: Legacy. The film will introduce a new slate of DC films, courtesy of Gunn and Peter Safran. Corenswet was the actor that majority of DC’s fanbase was rooting for since the casting rumors began popping up, so this comes as a major and exciting win for viewers. In a 2019 interview with Entertainment Weekly, David mentioned that his one dream is to play Superman one day and to bring a more upbeat energy to the role as opposed to Henry Cavill’s (who played Superman before Tyler Hoechlin took over the part) “dark and gritty” vibes, making him the perfect candidate for Gunn’s remodeling of the character.

“My pie-in-the-sky ambition is definitely to play Superman. I would love to see somebody do an upbeat, throwback [take on Superman]. I love the Henry Cavill dark and gritty take, but I would love to see the next one be very bright and optimistic.”

Who is the new Lois Lane and what is the plot of the movie?

David Corenswet is set to star alongside Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, a Daily Planet reporter who is investigating Superman’s secret identity in the film. Brosnahan is a talented actress with a strong screen presence. She is also known for her comedic timing, which will be essential for playing Lois Lane, a character who is often seen as a witty and sharp-tongued reporter. Fans are very excited to see how she portrays this character as opposed to Tyler Hoechlin’s Lois Lane, who was played by Elizabeth Tulloch.

James Gunn’s ‘Superman: Legacy’, will follow Clark Kent/Superman as he learns to balance his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. It will reportedly be set in Smallville, Kansas, where Clark was raised by his parents, Jonathan and Martha Kent. This new exciting take on Superman is scheduled to hit theaters on July 11, 2025, and filming will begin in early 2024. While Gunn has found his Lois and Clark, the casting search continues for other iconic Superman characters, such as Lex Luthor and The Authority. (The Authority is a team of superheroes who are expected to make an appearance in the film before eventually having their own film.)
